How to Start Your Own Record Label by Michael Goldberg

If you have interest in music and wants to know how to start a Record Label, you will have to produce and release your own music on CDs. For doing business under the title Record Label, you will have to do some additional formalities and you will reap the advantage of doing business in various ways including establishing an identity with brand name. Before starting any business including a record label, some cost is associated and you will have to make an arrangement for the money.

Before starting a record label, you will have to choose a name for your new label. You should ensure an original and creative name that fits your personality. You should also ensure that the name is not being used by another record label, however the name can be picked from other industries. The name if picked from other industries should have been selected in such a way that these do not infringe the copyright. Many national and international business houses do not prefer the use of their name or brands for any other businesses. The name selection is one of the most interesting, although it is time consuming and an impressive name is backbone of the business. You can also use search engine such as google, yahoo or alta vista for getting help for selecting a name.

Once you are ready with the name make sure that the name is not being used for any other business purposes in your state. You can contact to the Registrar of Deeds office in your state where a search will be performed for the selected name and you will be advised accordingly. You will have to obtain a license from Registrar of Deeds to commence the business under the name as selected. The next task is to select a form of business. The business can either be a sole proprietary or partnership based and if it is partnership based, all the terms and conditions of partnership should have been drafted as agreement stating the liabilities and responsibilities of each of the partner.

The last and most important task is to get a business license from the city or county business license office. A small fee has to be paid and you will have to face the tough question from the authorities especially if you have shown your business address as your house address. You will have to assure the authorities that the business will not disturb the neighbors and you will not make any records at your residence. By completing these formalities you have started a record label.

This is my take on this topic, I love doing this and I am extremely passionate about it, but If you want "Real" (yet Free!) Expert Advice about this stuff, that will make you a music industry success beyond your wildest dreams, you have got to read some of the stuff put out by a guy named Ty Cohen, founder of the MusicBizCenter.com/blog sign up for his free material from their site: http://www.TheUltimateRecordLabel.com/main
